Avika Gor Addresses Nepotism in South Cinema: "Why Bollywood Faces the Brunt"

Avika Gor, recognized for her role in "Balika Vadhu" and her contributions to Telugu cinema, sparked a debate in June 2023 with her comments regarding nepotism in the South Indian film industry, particularly within Telugu cinema. She argued that nepotism is more pronounced in the South compared to Bollywood, yet Bollywood receives disproportionate criticism for it. In an interview with RJ Siddharth Kanan, she remarked, “Nepotism is overt in the South... In the Telugu industry, it is right in front of you. How are people choosing not to see it?” She suggested that there is a bias against Bollywood, exacerbated by social media, where Hindi films are often judged harshly—partly stemming from a time when many were remakes of South Indian films, leading to perceptions of unoriginality.

However, Avika offered a more nuanced perspective in an interview with India Today, defending the supportive nature of the South Indian film industry. She noted that film families in the South not only support their own but also extend help to outsiders like herself. She cited an example where Nagarjuna readily supported the trailer launch of her film "Popcorn." Avika expressed her frustration with the ongoing nepotism debate, stating that it exists in various fields, not just cinema, and is not inherently negative.

Her comments highlight a double standard: while Bollywood is often criticized for favoritism, similar practices in the South are less scrutinized, potentially due to its strong star-driven culture and regional loyalty. Nevertheless, her own success in Telugu films as an outsider complicates the narrative, demonstrating that talent can still prevail.
