Could 2025 be Akshaye Khanna's Breakout Year?

Akshaye Khanna, a talented yet often underappreciated Bollywood actor, may be on the cusp of a significant career resurgence in 2025, driven by his recent role as Aurangzeb in Chhaava  and his upcoming lead in Akshardham: Operation Vajra Shakti. His intense performance in Chhaava, a historical drama that grossed over ₹600 crore, has reignited interest in his abilities, setting the stage for Akshardham, a patriotic action film slated for July 4, 2025. With parallels to Bobby Deol’s triumphant comeback, Akshaye’s strategic role choices and the patriotic fervor of Akshardham could make 2025 a defining year, provided the film overcomes its challenges.

In Chhaava, Akshaye portrayed the formidable Mughal emperor Aurangzeb opposite Vicky Kaushal’s Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. His chilling performance, though in a supporting role, earned widespread acclaim on platforms like X, where fans praised his ability to steal scenes with his intensity. This role, in a film that became one of 2025’s biggest hits, has reintroduced Akshaye to audiences, reminding them of his prowess seen in earlier films like Dil Chahta Hai and Humraaz. The buzz from Chhaava positions him perfectly for Akshardham, where he plays Major Hanut Singh, a heroic NSG commando in a retelling of the 2002 Akshardham Temple attack. This film, a re-release of the 2021 OTT project State of Siege: Temple Attack, taps into the patriotic genre that has fueled blockbusters like Uri: The Surgical Strike and Shershaah.

Akshardham: Operation Vajra Shakti is poised to be a pivotal project for Akshaye. Directed by Ken Ghosh, it dramatizes the real-life bravery of NSG commandos during the Gujarat temple attack, a story with deep emotional resonance, particularly in India’s heartland. The film’s trailer has already sparked excitement on X, with users lauding Akshaye’s commanding presence and the film’s high-octane action. Patriotic films have a proven track record, and Akshaye’s intense, grounded acting style aligns perfectly with the role of a stoic officer. If marketed effectively, Akshardham could gross ₹100–150 crore domestically, akin to mid-tier hits like Raazi. However, its success depends on differentiating itself from its OTT predecessor, possibly through enhanced visuals or new scenes, to justify a theatrical release. Competition in July 2025, potentially from sequels or star-driven films, poses a challenge, requiring strong word-of-mouth to stand out.

Akshaye’s trajectory mirrors Bobby Deol’s remarkable comeback. Bobby, after years of obscurity, revitalized his career with the OTT series Ashram and a viral role as Abrar in Animal (2023). His intense, memorable performances led to high-profile projects like Housefull 5 (2025, ₹175.95 crore) and Border 2. Similarly, Akshaye’s Aurangzeb in Chhaava was a high-impact supporting role that showcased his ability to captivate audiences. Akshardham offers him a chance to lead, much like Bobby’s shift to starring roles post-Animal. Both actors capitalise on nostalgia from their 90s and 2000s fan bases, as well as current trends favouring intense, patriotic, or villainous characters. This comparison highlights Akshaye’s potential and keeps the readers engaged in his career.

Other actors’ comebacks provide further context. Saif Ali Khan, after a rough patch, reinvented himself with Sacred Games and Tanhaji (2020), achieving a blend of OTT and theatrical successes. Anil Kapoor’s resurgence in Animal and Fighter (2024) demonstrates how veterans can shine in supporting roles before taking the lead in projects. Akshaye’s path—Chhaava as a credibility boost, Akshardham as a mass-appeal vehicle—follows this pattern. Yet, challenges remain: Akshardham’s OTT origins could deter audiences, and Akshaye’s history of critically praised but commercially modest films (Section 375, Ittefaq) means the film must break his box office ceiling. Strong marketing and emotional resonance could make Akshardham a hit, positioning Akshaye as a leading man, much like Bobby Deol or Saif Ali Khan, and cementing 2025 as his breakout year.
