Why 'Dhadak 2' Struggles: The Perils of Socially Relevant Cinema in an Entertainment-Driven Market"

Dhadak 2 had a slow start, earning about ₹3.35 crore net in India on its first day. This shows it is hard to attract people to films with heavy topics like caste discrimination. Dhadak 2, following Dhadak (2018) and based on the Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal, tells a story of a cross-caste romance facing social barriers. This may not connect with many young viewers who want fun, light movies. Only 22.85% of available Hindi seats were filled on opening day. This, despite praise for the film's strong story and acting by Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, shows a gap between the film and what most people want.

The observation that socially relevant films potentially alienate audiences is apt. Dhadak 2’s focus on casteism, while praised for its bravery and emotional depth, might be too confrontational or somber for viewers who prioritize escapism over introspection. Furthermore, the film's limited release on just 1,000 screens and competition from flashier releases like Son of Sardaar 2 (₹6.75 crore on day one) and the sustained success of Saiyaara (₹7.36 crore on its 15th day) further diluted its appeal.

At the same time, movies that split opinions( Chavva) can succeed by creating a clear divide, getting certain groups to support strong or risky ideas. This brings attention and loyal fans, a. Dhadak 2’s problems show the risk of making movies with a message that might not attract large audiences, especially since young people often want fun over serious subjects. Still, the film’s good reviews and possible growth from word-of-mouth could help it later, though it will not be easy.
