Look back 2021: Celebrities on two trends they have noticed in Showbiz
As the year is coming to an end and 2022 is just round the corner, celebrities take a look back at how the past year has been. They talk about the new trends that they noticed in the entertainment industry in 2021, and how that has affected them or the industry in general. Here’s what they said:
Nishant Malkhani: The two trends that I have noticed is that people are making shows on subjects that are a reflection of the society and the audience is loving it. We don't get to see high on drama romantic shows or saas-bahu sagas. Shows like Anupamaa, and Rakshabandhan… show more on women empowerment, real life issues rather than love stories. Like in Anupamaa we saw a middle-aged mother's struggle to achieve her dreams and become an independent woman. In Rakshabandhan…, we are showing the strong bond between a brother and how they always have each other’s back. Then the second trend is that everyone is enjoying subtle comedies like Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma, Bhabiji Ghar par Hai! etc. People switch to television for relief and enjoyment, they don't have to see dramatic stressful stuff.
Sharad Malhotra: Love triangles are in, be it Anupamaa or Vidrohi, a lot of shows have love triangles in the story and audiences like the relationship drama they create. People have started watching daily soaps and OTT more, one of the reasons is that a lot of people have worked from home and stayed at home more in the past two years. Secondly, I feel age is no bar for the protagonists now. There are shows that have been made on middle-aged women as well as middle-aged couples.
Jasmin Bhasin: In 2021, music videos became a boon for actors. It gives an opportunity to explore good music and on-screen romance via songs in beautiful locations, and it builds a strong connection with the audience. The second is that we are exploring a wide variety of content and that is being loved by the audience.
Vijayendra Kumeria : The 2 trends that I have noticed in TV are bad guys getting by the female protagonists in different ways and love triangles… these are two trends that do occur in most of the shows, and viewers do enjoy the plots which have these elements. Maybe its interesting for them to watch the right person winning in the end of the whole process of drama.
Reyen Eyes: 2021 has been a year full of art. People have had the time to check out so much content across platforms. OTTs, YouTube, short video sharing apps, require a different amount of task force and resources but the viewership runs parallel with the seriousness of the art. Newcomers are welcome more than ever in the film and music industry. The newer generation is appreciating new faces, who are perfectly cast, and singers, who are serving the truth in the form of music. This shift is empowering many out there to become independent and create an opportunity instead of waiting for one. Another trend is that brands are collaborating with budding creators to encourage authenticity. We might say that the Indian youth has modernized itself in terms of fashion and entertainment to the contemporary world. The choice of lifestyle has upgraded and new trends are picking up by the day. Women have an active participation or may we say, there is nothing found complete without their touch.
Ranaksh Rana :First is the post-pandemic effect on opportunities. A lot of interesting projects are coming up and the audience is appreciating diverse characters and their varied styles of acting. Good craft is in demand. Hence more and more new talent is getting chances. Secondly the OTT effect. Indian content is more than ever consumed by a global audience and appreciated both at home and abroad. You have so many options across different genres and the audience has the choice to decide what to watch.
Delnaaz Irani :One most important change is that earlier the protagonists definitely were in the bracket of 20s or younger, then there was a phase that was all about child artists. Today we have an interesting phase where we have strong women leading from the front. There are a lot of women empowerment happening in shows, and women above 40 are getting lead roles. That’s a very positive change. Also, the fact that TV is also making good shows, and not just introducing out-and-out negative characters just to add drama and grab eyeballs. Audiences are asking for anything that is real and relatable. It’s not about that too-much and unnecessary drama. I also feel that the audiences have also become open, accepting and receptive of experiments and new things.
Simple Kaul :All I know is that the trend has changed, people watch more realistic shows and content that is relatable, makes them aware and think. The audience is scattered from TV to web, so the small screen needs to buck up is something that I feel.
Nupur Joshi- Last three years have seen a paradigm shift in the way the content is created and viewed. The primacy of the story as a lead has seen a meteoric rise . The younger generation has lead the way by pushing the envelope, and the established actors & creators have adapted to this new wave. The rise of web series and OTT platforms provide creative freedom , which enables such a shift .
