Even though it is being said that the television industry has progressed content-wise, somewhere in all TV shows we find one woman who every now and then becomes a villain in everyone's eye. So, it seems some things are still the same. Manish Wadhwa, who has been a part of the small screen for long, and has done a number of shows such as Chandragupta Maurya, Paramavatar Shri Krishna and Hero – Gayab Mode On, shares what he thinks about the trend.
“TV is a medium of the home. Every household has a TV. The ladies in the family are sort of home ministers. The serials that are made therefore mostly revolve around female actors and characters because mostly the audience consists of women. They will try and look for themselves in the show. We have progressed much subject wise, technology-wise
, photography and VFX wise too but still the medium is for women, through them the communication happens. Hence, female characters get preference, whether it’s a positive or a negative role,” he says.
Women should be respected both on real and reel. But sometimes some shows go overboard and portray them as next to god. And you see them doing the unthinkable which in real life is not possible.
“Yes, it is seen that these days on TV the way women are portrayed as someone next to god they can do everything. They've got all the powers. It doesn't always happen like that as some shows are different for sure, but if the story has a demand then people sometimes clap sometimes abuse as well woh kehte hai na kai baar taaliyan bhi bajate hain kai baar gaaliyan bhi dete hain,” he shares.
Ask if he thinks male actors have started getting better and powerful roles of late and he replies, “The way things have progressed definitely male actors have started getting opportunities. I am fortunate and God is kind that from the beginning I have been a part of male-dominated shows. I have always been blessed with that. So, I won't be able to comment much on this.”
It is said that women rule the TV screens while men dominate the silver screen. “It is there like hero's are still there on the silver screen and stuff like that but female-fronted films are also doing well. On the other hand, male-dominated TV shows are equally doing well. It doesn't really matter on whom the story or narration is based, what is important is the story. If the story is good then everything else would work,” he logs out.
