Reality shows have always thrived on conflict, but the latest season of Rise and Fall has made the strategy explicit: guests are no longer mere morale boosters or emotional support. They arrive with briefs, targets, and the understanding that every frame will be weaponised. In an era where audiences switch off the moment the drama dips, producers have stopped pretending otherwise.
On Rise and Fall 2, Shreya Kalra did not walk in simply as Rishabh Jaiswal’s supportive girlfriend. She entered with a clear objective — take the fight to Shehzad Poonawalla. The tissue-paper jab was not a spontaneous outburst; it was a calculated, low-grade act of provocation, delivered in full view of the cameras after Shehzad, Swara Bhaskar, Karan Patel and others had just been toppled from the penthouse. She knows the format. She knows the basement watches everything.
Shehzad responded exactly as expected. Channelling the old maxim that attack is the best form of defence, he went long, loud and personal. It rattled Rishabh, who went ballistic. Fair enough — two can play that game. Shehzad is a veteran of the television trade; he understands when to go for the jugular, and he is not above going below the belt. That is not a bug. It is the nature of the format.
Shreya then turned her attention to Swara. Swara did not match the same register, but she held her ground. Later she lost her cool and called out the familiar “content creator” lecture — the old fault line between actors and influencers.
Gautam Gulati’s brother, who also entered as a guest, threw underhanded barbs without letting things go nuclear. Most other visitors, such as Karan’s friend Anita Hassanandani, stayed non-partisan and largely decorative. The contrast was deliberate.
The same pattern is now visible across other reality shows. Guests with personal stakes are being deployed to light the match, not merely pass the torch. Interestingly, Shreya and Rishabh appear to enjoy stirring the pot — they even clashed earlier when she was on Lock Upp and he entered as a guest.
Contestants still need breathing room and the occasional pep talk. But if that is all the audience receives, they log off. Guests like Shreya are what the format now demands. Rise and Fall wants them in the game; that is why they are allowed to rank among the contestants and influence outcomes. More friction is the point.
